BOB HOPE AND AMERICAN VARIETY

Library of Congress Washington DC

"Bob Hope and American Variety," is an overview of the evolution of American variety entertainment from vaudeville to television, seen through the career of Bob Hope and others. We created an atmosphere that is theatrical, rich, and many-layered. The space was divided into roughly chronological thematic areas indicated by marquee lights and rear-illuminated headings. The cases were designed to subtly suggest a stage with parted curtains. Interactive audio-visual stations offer audio recordings and clips from Vaudeville shows, motion pictures and television. One of the exhibition highlights--the "Joke File"--enables the visitor to select a category and view jokes from Bob Hope's collection of 80,000 pages of material. In designing this exhibition, our intention was to produce a means of presentation that was as lively and entertaining as the subject matter.
