This
exhibition presented over 300 long-secret documents never previously
seen outside of Russian government archives. The visual banality of
these typed and handwritten pages contrasted with their contents:
purges, famines, and other grim realities of a turbulent period in
Russian history. We developed a system that differentiated visually
among the documents, their identification labels, their English translations,
and interpretive commentary. The character of the exhibition structure
and graphics was inspired by Russian Constructivism and by post-revolutionary
Russian graphic design.
